Let the Right One In

Thursday, 5 November brings the worsening early-winter cold into everyday routines while placing Oskar’s evening workout and reunion with Eli within the same day. Its small, practical hardships and quiet encounters link the wider chill to Oskar’s immediate concern with being treated as ordinary and with the person waiting for him.

Weather and the Day’s Setting

A cold spell had begun around the time the submarine foundered and had grown harsher over the preceding week. The date’s seasonal conditions appear not as background alone but through their material cost: Morgan’s feet are freezing, and the cold shapes his choices as he makes his way home from the subway.

Morgan’s Morning

At half past nine, Morgan is returning from Ulvsunda, where he had gone to ask whether the junkyard needed help and whether he could earn a couple of hundred. Business is bad, so the visit produces no work. He has coffee with the men in an office crowded with spare parts, catalogs, and pinup calendars before heading back toward the subway.

His old cowboy boots are beloved but impractical: their hole lets in the cold, and they cannot accommodate thick socks. Morgan could spend a hundred on Chinese takeout, but would rather endure the cold; he has no new winter boots this year either. The passage makes scarcity tangible through a series of small calculations rather than a single dramatic setback.

Oskar’s Evening at School

Later, Oskar finishes a workout session at the school gymnasium. He discovers he is not as weak as he had assumed and can do more than a couple of men who have attended several times before. The gym offers a contrast to school: Fernando Avila is less severe there, and the other men leave Oskar alone. Micke is absent, leaving Oskar wondering whether Micke is now afraid of him after what happened on the ice.

Fernando Avila gives Oskar the chance to talk about the incident, but does not press him when Oskar declines. As Oskar leaves the others and starts home, Eli calls to him from inside the school. She has been sitting in the shadows, waiting; she heard him say goodbye and heard the others respond as though he were a completely normal person. Oskar walks over to meet her. The day thus ends by bringing together the gym’s temporary ease, Oskar’s unsettled thoughts about Micke, and Eli’s deliberate wait for him.
